THE HISTORY OF VEKKULA The village of Vekkula is located north of Juokslahti, in the city of Jämsä. The distance from the city to Vekkula is 20 km or more. Vekkula has nearly 40 households and over 20 summer cottages. You can get information of the history and the present of Vekkula from these pages and you find links to other relevant internet pages. Also all other information of the village of Vekkula is welcome! Vekkula village is old crofter area. The oldest farm houses, Palvia and Rympsylä, were built in 1736. Since the tenant farmers got their independence, the villagers started raising cattle and in the winter time the men did forest work. At its peak, Vekkula had a school and three shops; Punala, Vekkulan Osuuskauppa and Oksalan kauppa. The village had its own shoemaker, clock repairer, masseur, butchers, dressmaker and a seer. |
